Hosting City

Budapest the popular city in Hungary is the host city for World Championship 2023, also the capital. This city has a rich history, dating back to the Roman era. 


Venue

The National Athletics Center in Budapest hosted the 2023 World Athletics Championships. The stadium, which has a 38,000-seat capacity, was erected in 1998. In 2022, the stadium underwent renovations in time for the World Championships.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, 346 medals (173 gold, 173 silver, and 100 bronze) were given. The medal table for the top three countries were:

Ethiopia ten gold, six silver, and 5 bronze medals

Nine gold, six silver, and three bronze medals for Kenya

seven gold, ten silver, and six bronze for the United States



Highlights

The following were a few of the 2023 World Athletics Championships' top points:

  • Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra became the first from his country to win a world championship title in track and field when he won the gold medal in the men's javelin throw.
  • Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei, who ran the men's 5000 meters in 12:35.36 to win the gold medal, broke the previous world record.
  • With a time of 29:01.03, Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey won the gold medal in the women's 10,000m race.
  • Femke Bol of the Netherlands won the gold decoration in the ladies' 400m obstacles, establishing a worldwide best of 52.20 seconds.
  • Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway won the gold medal in the men's 1500 meters, turning into the main man to win the occasion many times.
  • Sydney McLaughlin of the US won the gold medal in the ladies' 400m hurdle, also establishing a worldwide best of 51.46 seconds.
  • With ten gold medals, Ethiopia won the most of any nation.
  • Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei made history by being the first person to triple-win the men's 5000-meter world championship.
  • Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey became the first woman to triple-win the 10,000-meter world championship.
  • Kenyan Brigid Kosgei made history by being the first female to triple-win the women's marathon world championship.




The World Athletics Championships took place for the 19th time in 2023. In 1983, the first World Athletics Championships took place.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the championships that were initially slated to take place in Eugene, Oregon, were relocated to Budapest.

With over 1.5 million viewers in attendance, the championships were a huge success.

The championships were also profitable for the organizing committee, who brought in almost €100 million.

The competition served as a showcase for the world's top athletes, and numerous world records were broken.

The competitions also aided in the global and Hungarian promotion of athletics as a sport.

Ten world records were set throughout the competitions.

More than 200 nations and territories watched the championships on television.

The competition gave Budapest a significant economic boost.

World Athletics experienced great success thanks to the championships.
